The ability to achieve the greatest possible load volume requires the use of special
facilities. We therefore use so-called jumbo trucks and mega trailers for high-volume
freight services on particular routes.
Capacity utilisation is the term used for trucks with a particularly large load volume,
usually 100 m³ or more. Jumbo trucks are predominantly used for transporting bulky
goods such as insulating or packaging material. Jumbo trucks are also frequently used
for delivery shipments for the automotive industry as a minimum load height of 3 m is
frequently required.
As German traffic regulations (StVZO) restrict a vehicle's permissible overall height
to 4 m, the jumbo truck's greater load volume compared with a normal truck is
achieved by a lower load area. This is achieved by special construction
characteristics and in some cases also by smaller tyres. The low-slung load area can
cause problems when loading and unloading trucks of this type at loading ramps if
these ramps are not height-variable.
The maximum possible load volume of approximately 120 m³ is achieved by jumbo trailers
with a rigid body. With articulated Lorries, vehicle combinations featuring a
so-called mega trailer are also referred to as jumbo. But because an articulated
lorry is shorter than a truck trailer because of statutory regulations, the
articulated lorry only attains a loading volume of approximately 100 m³.
These mega-trailers are frequently used in delivery shipments for the automotive
industry because the 3 m load height permits optimal utilisation of the available
space thanks to the automotive industry's standardised and readily stackable loads.
Compared with the truck trailer, the articulated lorry permits rapid loading and
unloading without time-consuming repeated manoeuvring, which can frequently be an
important criterion with just-in-time deliveries for the automotive industry.
A mega-trailer is a special version of a semi-trailer. Unlike standard semi-trailers,
a mega-trailer has a 3 m load height. The 13.60 × 2.48 × 3.00 m dimensions of a
mega-trailer provide space for 34 pallets. When utilised in an optimal manner,
such as for example triple-stacked lattice boxes, a mega trailer's loading volume
is 100 m³. By virtue of their large load volume, mega-trailers are predominantly
used in the automotive industry as standardised and readily stackable loads allow
full use to be made of their 3 m internal height.
